Okay, so I notice that other moderaters are leading nice little discussion threads and always being one to follow the crowd (insert a big snort here) I thought I'd do the same. Actually I just know a good idea when I see one.
So what is your favorite piece of "traditional" Middle Eastern music? What's your favorite non-traditional?
My favorite traditional is Bitwannes Beek. Stop laughing, Anajahela! I rave about that song all the time. We're hoping to write a piece for the REG Project's version of it. I also really love the one from 1001 Nights.
My favorite non-traditional? Probably Dead Can Dance and I am a bum because I forget the name but it's the first track from Into the Labyrinth. Der.
Okay, next?

Re: Favorite "traditional" piece
Thu, March 10, 2005 - 11:01 AMFavorite traditional piece, hm? I really like the one that Anajahela is thinking of using as her next solo. I don't know the name, though. I don't know the name of most of the traditional stuff I like because I only hear it in class or during rehearsals. If someone wanted to make me a mix cd. . . .
Oh, wait. You gave me the one from your class. Which I forgot about in the midst of Dance From the Heart rehearsals. *roots in cd pile* Yeah. I need to listen to this.
Non-traditional? There's a lot. I keep coming up with ideas for choreographing Siouxsie songs. Until I actually sit down to choreograph Siousxie songs. Then, I got nothin'. But DCD is a fav, as are Vas and Stellamara, Nine Inch Nails, Cocteau Twins. Basically, the stuff I already dance to. -

Thu, March 10, 2005 - 12:02 PMTraditional:
Does Shik Shak Shok count? That's my jam!
Non-Traditional:
These 3 equally...
*Najma-Pukar ...it's about calling out to someone who's far away. I cry when I dance to that song, which is why I never perform it - I cry like Julia Roberts. Not pretty. Makes me think of my brother (he's in Germany, was in Iraq).
*Dralion - Stella Errans ...this I dance 90% arms to. Never performed this one either. Prolly next hafla I will.
*Dralion - Miracula AEternitatis ...this is screaming for a prop. Haven't figured out what prop yet. -

Re: Favorite "traditional" piece
Thu, March 10, 2005 - 4:01 PMI also love Batwanes Beek, Red! I adore the Warda version that is on the Arabia (The Women's Voice) album.
I almost never know the names of traditional songs I am dancing to, because I am an mp3 downloading FREAK!
I like drum solos a lot, though.
Non-traditional?
Fear by Sarah MacLachlan
Angel by Massive Attack (though I haven't actually danced to it)
and I dig me some Tarkan!
Oh, and Tahja- I think Shik Shak Shok is a traditional song if you do! : ) -

Now to find the perfect stand-alone DVD burner....
