American Tribal Style Belly Dance is a contemporary dance form that is all the rage on the West Coast and now its available in Frisco, TX at Kokopelli’s Wellness Spa and Yoga Center! American Tribal Style Bellydance is a form of bellydance made famous by FatChanceBellyDance of San Franscico, CA and Gypsy Caravan of Portland, Oregon. American Tribal Style Bellydance fuses folkloric dances and cultural elements from the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia, India, Spain, and of course, the United States. ATS cultivates a sense of community, beauty and strength among women. In this form of bellydance, groups of 2 or more women dance in a “tribe” using natural movement, grounded steps, a series of verbal and non-verbal cues and improvisational choreography.
In this basic workshop, students will learn a brief history of the dance, some basic fast steps, a few slow movements and some dance embellishments. By the end of the workshop, we will be dancing together as a tribe. ATS is for every body type and age and is excellent for strengthening the legs, hips, abs, arms and self-esteem. Learn to feel strong, vibrant and sensual no matter what size, shape or age you are with American Tribal Style Bellydance.
All levels and sizes of dancers are welcome. Please wear a midriff bearing sports top and sports pants, a unitard or form fitting workout clothes that will allow the instructor to see your body alignment. Be sure to place a scarf around your hips to accent movement in that area. Please avoid wearing items that make noise when you dance or could fall to the floor and become lodged in the foot or a fellow dancer. Feel free to wear jazz, lyrical or ballet shoes or go barefoot. Be ready to smile, laugh, dance or even sing! Please be sure to bring some water and a towel!
Your Instructor: Keva Larthridge-Mack is a professional life coach specializing in coaching for self-discovery, fitness, work life balance and interpersonal communication. She holds professional certifications in yoga, personal training, meditation, education and transpersonal counseling. Keva has been a student of American Tribal Style Bellydance and Tribal Fusion Bellydance since 1996 and has been a bellydance instructor since 2001.

Re: ATS Workshop in Frisco!
Thu, April 7, 2005 - 8:46 AMInteresting...I haven't heard of this woman. Is she certified to call what she's teaching "ATS"? Carolena of Fat Chance (who will be hosted by the lovely ladies of Tribal Evolution the weekend of May 21 for a 2-day workshop) has a certification program you are supposed to complete before you call what you're teaching "ATS." There are only a handful of people who are certified, and I thought I'd heard of them all... -

Re: ATS Workshop in Frisco!
Thu, April 7, 2005 - 8:50 AMI don't know if she is certified or not.
A similar question was raised in another tribe.... it was responded to, but I don't know if it covers everything or not...

Thu, April 7, 2005 - 8:57 AMHmm. The bio doesn't say anything about going through a certification program. -

Re: ATS Workshop in Frisco!
Thu, April 7, 2005 - 9:11 AMNo, and I kind of get the impression that her study of ATS has been through videos only.
More than likely, she's using the term "ATS" when she shouldn't be.
I'm going to check out the class - get a feel for it.
It's the only class remotely near me so I've got to at least give it a shot! -

Re: ATS Workshop in Frisco!
Thu, April 7, 2005 - 1:06 PMWell, I'm going to chime in here with my .2.....I, too, was curious because I've never heard of her and I tend to be obsessed with knowing who's who and what's what in the bellydance community...It does seem a little strange to not want to network with other dancers and studios when you are studying an artform-any artform. Maybe it's just me. On the flipside....I have been studying glass art for about 5 years and I've only had one real lesson so far in my career. I've learned the craft through lots of practice, books and many hours of gathering information on the internet. I still call myself a glass artist even though I've never studied with Loren Stump or Lucio Babacoa. I don't teach......She may be a brilliant, warm and caring teacher. You have to start somewhere IMO. You also have to remember that ATS is still relatibvely new in this area, too. I've known about it and studied it since almost the very beginnings of it here in Texas.....still I am curious why she never searched out a warm body to learn from....Can you do that with yoga? Do you have to attain a certain level of ability or some hands-on training before you can teach it? Curious minds wanna know......

Re: ATS Workshop in Frisco!
Thu, April 7, 2005 - 3:13 PMHeck, why don't you just bypass the class, watch a few videos, and then start teaching your own classes? -

Re: ATS Workshop in Frisco!
Thu, April 7, 2005 - 3:26 PMHm. Sarcasm at the expense of a new instructor in the area. -
-
Re: ATS Workshop in Frisco!
Thu, April 7, 2005 - 3:32 PMIt's not sarcastic. It's an accepted training tool in this industry. -

Re: ATS Workshop in Frisco!
Thu, April 7, 2005 - 4:30 PMYes, it was sarcastic. Cynthia, I understand your concern about bad instructors out there, I really do. And yes, some bad instructors learned from videos having had no prior teaching experience. BUT, truth is, we all have to start from somewhere ground floor and work our way up.
I've been to some "certified" fitness instructors and tango instructors and all I saw that they were qualified for was to pass the qualification test! Qualifications don't mean a damn if they're not passionate about teaching.
BTW, video IS an accepted training tool throughout the dance industry, no matter what genre. Tango, salsa, flamenco, ballroom instructors learn techniques and styles and teach it to their dancers all the time.
And if Carolena has a problem with her style being taught "un-certified", it's for her to judge, not anyone else.
Good instructors, no matter where they got their training, will do what it takes to learn more.
Bad instructors are weeded out by virtue of their students, or lack thereof. Good instructors keep on keepin' on... with the desire to further to improve themselves, which will improve their students. -

Thu, April 7, 2005 - 4:40 PM"And if Carolena has a problem with her style being taught "un-certified", it's for her to judge, not anyone else."
True. Which is why I brought this up. If Keva respects the art form and its founder, and is passionate about what she's teaching, she will take it from here.
"BTW, video IS an accepted training tool throughout the dance industry, no matter what genre. Tango, salsa, flamenco, ballroom instructors learn techniques and styles and teach it to their dancers all the time."
Exactly. And, no, I was not being sarcastic. And I never said that Keva would be a bad instructor. In fact, Rachel Brice said that she learned a lot from video, and she's a damn good instructor. So, no, that was not a sarcastic remark. -

Re: ATS Workshop in Frisco!
Sun, August 14, 2005 - 10:22 AMyes, I do agree video is a wonderful tool for learning! not only watching videos of instruction and performances...( I love to watch instructional dvds! and often will loan mine out to the students or play them while we wait for others to arrive for class!!)
another good use of video is to tape yourself and watch to see how you yourself are doing! I use this tool often with my students...it works better than mirrors sometimes! lol~ and hey, there is nothing cooler than seeing yourself dance and saying..wow! look how great I did! what better way can you think of to boost your student's? especially the newer ones who are unsure of themselves? when they finally see it all together ... what a feeling of accomplishment!

Re: ATS Workshop in Frisco!
Thu, May 12, 2005 - 6:54 AMhey Katy & co!
not sure about ATS. certification, I am strictly cabaret ...but in cabaret, there is no requirement for certification, BUT it is available from various teachers who want to teach THEIR style of cabaret....it sounds like the other gals think this woman is not certified...maybe you can contact the ATS certification board and see if she has gone through the hoops or not? as for yoga...yes, I am a certified yoga teacher, you have to pass other rigorous certifications, cpr, basic first aid, either a 200 hr or 500 hr yoga cert, then you can also be ACE certified... so I guess it depends on the form of instruction you are seeking and what kind of instructor... You have to see if you "click" what good is a class if you think the instructor is not good even b4 you go to it? we have something like that going on in Buffalo, one studio will bash another, and it is the students who miss out on great opportunities to expand their knowledge and creativity...perhaps this woman has a whole new version of ATS? like Heidi in Domba! has things that are all her own... if the prices of the classes are outrageous, then perhaps, you may be more comfortable with attending a proven and certified method of instruction... but if they are reasonable, why not check it out and see what she has to offer? everyone has their own artistic style, I recommend that my students learn from as many mentors as possible, everyone has something to teach another person! It is true, you can only learn so much from videos, having a mentor to watch & correct you into perfection is a blessing... -

Re: ATS Workshop in Frisco!
Sat, May 14, 2005 - 9:33 AMVERY well said, Nedra. Thank you for putting into words what I've been feeling with this issue. We all can learn from each other. Everyone has something to offer.
You rock! :D -

Re: ATS Workshop in Frisco!
Sun, August 14, 2005 - 10:17 AMNP babe...thanks for the compliment! I'm just so tired of all of the cattiness in all of this.. especially when they want to make themselves look better and put another studio/dancer down... EVERY teacher has something to offer and I love each and every teacher who has taken time out of their day to teach me what they know.
Do you think in other styles of dance there is this constant putting down of each other to ruin the other person or to cause the choosing of sides? I don't think so...
In the dance world it is an HONOR to have studied with MANY different teachers... I have worked with MANY teachers in MANY different styles of dance, from ballet, to Martha Graham technique, to Latin, the list can go on and on..but NOT ONCE in all of my years of dancing have I seen people act towards each other the way they do in belly dance...it is very sad indeed..people seem to forget they are dealing with the human heart & soul...and that they are only here for one reason..to dance...

Thu, June 2, 2005 - 8:19 AMI was not bashing. Only questioning. Why is it not okay to question? Why is questioning interpreted as bashing? -

Re: ATS Workshop in Frisco!
Thu, June 2, 2005 - 11:06 AMBecause you cannot hear tone of voice or read facial expressions in email. There have been PhD theses written about how email smilies developed to replace facial expressions in this form of communication.
