Byblos

After all the discussion that has gone on in the Liquid Hips and the other DFW area tribes, myself and Anajahela have decided not to support Byblos. While I hesitate to use the word boycott I guess that's the closest thing. Honestly we only frequent it for dance events that are held there or if we are in the neighborhood. I imagine we'll be enjoying ourself at the Taco Bell a mile down the road from here on out.

I had to confer with Anajahela about this and she didn't hesitate at all. I find the entire situation detestible and if I had seen the event I would absolutely testify. It is reprehensible for this to have happened regardless of the style of dance or the dancer herself.

I have heard of dancers being accosted in the parking lot after a show or even on the way in. I have heard them have to "handle" grabby men (women too on rare occasions). I have heard of dancers being propositioned by the owner of the club numerous times. This is the first I've heard of a dancer being attacked during a performance. I had thought it was the one place a dancer might be safe. I guess I was naiive in my thinking.

OK if you have heard all this bad stuff going on why would you or any other dancer go to the show Thursday in the first place? and if you know he or his wife dislike a style of dance why would you dance it there? I do not understand why you would. I am not looking for a fight only asking ?

My mistake. That was a collective of many stories I've heard only a few of them from Byblos. I hadn't heard that they don't like that style and I knew that Anahata has performed there in tribal style. It's never seemed like a problem in the past.

exactly...we ALL performed there in January for 3rd coast TRIBAL...and there wasn't a problem.
Well I suppose it isn't a problem when it brings in money...but if it's a free show and you aren't making money off of it, then it isn't welcome..
        Maybe that is the issue?

LOOK THIS IS NOT A TRIBAL VS CABARET ISSUE LIKE PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO MAKE IT INTO!!!!!! if this had happened to a cabaret dancer I'd be JUSt as angry...NO dancer deserves to be treated like this.
Dancers need to stand together and say no it isn't acceptable. In the sports world if a player acted like that, he'd be ejected and fined.
Something has to be done to show it's unacceptable. Simple as that.

Zahara, I did the show because Miss Red asked because she was asked. And unlike you, we are fat and don't get this kind of opportunity very often. And I get that you don't wanna start a fight but you weren't there and just don't know.

We have seen many well-put-together shows there. Thursday's event was going very smoothly except for a musical glitch at the beginning. Everyone's set looked beautiful and the audience was participating. Then there was the big hubbub in the last 7 minutes of the show.

To be perfectly honest, I don't really know Heather. I have never spent any time talking to her at shows. I'm not a tribal dancers so we run in different social circles but what happened to her was assault and that is unacceptable behavior in our society.

I will now boycott Byblos because I will not risk myself or ANY other dancer of ANY style being treated in that fashion. Before Thursday there was no warning of any kind that the woman in question had such an issue with any style of dance and who in their right mind would be expected to know that they would be pelted with ceramic objects?!

The dancer in question made sure that it was ok to dance to this particular music beforehand and was given the go-ahead by the restaraunt. No one deserves this kind of treatment....

Thank you for claritying that, Katie. I'd thought that was the case but I'm glad you stated it clearly.

          I did as well...

I let the host of the event know what I was going to do and asked if that was okay or if I should do something more "toned down"

Ok. I would like to clarify a couple of things. Before we named this particular event Raq the Casbah, it was referred to as tribal night within the studio and was discussed with the owner of Byblos. My intention was to give dancers from all over the area that do all different styles of belly dance (tribal, cabaret, gypsy, whatever!) a place to dance. Again, I would have never knowingly put anyone in danger if I did not have complete permission to have this kind of show.
Also, the show was free but the RESTAURANT was making money. The house was packed with dancers and their supporters.

Hey. Most of you know me. Erik from Lyeface and Heather Fame. From a business perspective, The owner of Byblos made a huge error in Judgement. Letting his insecure, childish, harpy of a wife run around acting like a fool. I have been told that this is not the first time this woman has acted out in such a way. So that is that. Control your own Marios.
      Secondly,
      Cab Vs. Tribal Vs. Fusion...
From what I was told, you all dance because you love it. It is both liberating and empowering. Fluidity in movement and grace. I have seen alot of you dance and I have been blown away by you. I have seen Cab, ATS, Fusion, Gypsy, Bangra, you name it. I will tell you one thing if you want to see undulation, bellyrolls, great music and beautiful women in beautiful costumes... Go see all of them. They all have something in common and something new to offer. Oh and to the people who think that dancing to "American pop music in Halloween costumes" is not bellydance... We hope to see you on the road at a Liquid Hips BELLYDANCE workshop or event sometime. We will be on the road alot this summer so you can check the website for a town near you.

I remember you telling me this when I checked with you about Just Fabulous. At the time I wanted to make sure that our look and our style would be accepted. Because of our size as plus size women and my particular style of Romany fusion, we are not wanted at some shows. We're okay with that, we surely have our niche.
We've been sneered at, snubbed, laughed at in some places, and currently I have a faction of little girls geting out of their gymnastics class making fun of my ladies in class ( we have to use windows at night for our mirrors).

What's the point? Well, the point is that not one of those people have ever attempted to cause us physical harm in the 2 1/2 years of dancing. Not once.
