What is a hafla? It is an experience of joy! Come watch beautiful dancers perform all styles of dance for you - from hooping to hip hop to belly dance - all styles of dance, all levels of performance, and types of dancers welcome! It is always a blast for the audience and dancers alike!
This month we will have a bake sale (rumor has it we will have some double chocolate pudding cake on the table for this!), raffles, dancer drawing, and more!

We always have room for more! Do you dance or have students that dance? Come enjoy our supportive, inviting environment where you can interact with your audience, and it is OK not to be professional level! Kismet Dallas, TOMORROW! July 25, 7pm, Plaza Arts Center

In this economic climate it is difficult for everyone to make ends meet... this is just as true for not-for-profit groups.

To help Kismet continue to provide our open stage that does not charge dancers to perform, we have two fundraisers at the July 25th event: we are selling flowers for $3 each so that you can buy a flower to give to a dancer to show your appreciation, and we are also having a 50/50 raffle.

In addition to our normal raffle, we will make available Raffle Tumbler Img50/50 raffle tickets that anyone can buy for $1 each. At the end of the night, we will draw for the winner of the raffles and the winner of the 50/50 raffle gets half of the money raised by the sale of the 50/50 raffle tickets. The more tickets bought, the bigger the pot!
Help us continue to provide this wonderful stage for the Dallas area! It is going to be an amazing night. See you there!

Raks into Spring 2009 THANKS!! (x-post)

So, I have finally been able to catch my breath, get back into the regular monotony of work, and had enough time (without Tribe being down) to get a post up!

I just wanted to personally say Thanks to all that came out to support “Raks into Spring”2009 featuring Zahra Zuhair.

I am sure those that attended can attest to the fact that she is an outstanding, down to earth, instructor and an even more remarkable performer! There were varied levels in the workshops and she was able to make it challenging for the most seasoned performer as well as palpable for even the beginner student.

Oodles of talent from North Texas and beyond graced the stage at Rose Marine theater for our Gala Show. Zahra performed twice, once with Wind and Fingers who added such a wonderful variation with the ambiance of live music.

Again, a VERY sincere, THANKS to all who made our event a success!

belly dance bra and belt for sale

This is a hand made costume. Both bra and belt are lined. The bra will fit a 34 C. The bra is very sturdy will hold it's shape well.
This costume will work great for new students, hobbyist, class recitals, parties photos and performances.
This is an original one of a kind costume. May see photos in my pics on page 1.

The bra will fit a 34 C. The bra cups are covered in a pink colored fabric with pink bugle beads sewn into the fabric. The bra is trimmed in a gold sequin gimp trim. The bra has beaded fringe made from pink seed beads that hangs about 4 3/4 inches long in groups of three .The neck straps are about 34 inches long and tie in a criss cross manner with D rings. The side panels are covered in a pink color velvet fabric(as well as the neck straps I would like to add) The side panels have D rings attach to the ends to add closure for the bra. The is bra is lined and very sturdy will hold it's shape.

The belt is cover in the same pink beaded fabric and gold trim as the bra cups. . The belt is one piece and is a tie front as if it were a hip sash . (has a bit more weight to it than a hip sash) The belt has an elastic casing in the back that can be gather to help with a better fit around the hips for a dancer with curves. The belt is 35 inches long. The belt will fit a small to medium . the belt can be sized down before I send it if you would like it smaller. The fringe is made from pink colored seed beads like on the bra and is about 5 3/4 inches long. This is a nice set sparkles well in light and good movement with the fringe Email with any questions and more photos. This multi-level workshop will outline two tribal fusion combinations emphasizing technique and isolation. The first

Amy's Art of Overlay is at the heart of this intermediate toadvanced bellydance workshop aimed to add expressive layers and distinction to your dance style. Although controlled simultaneous movement is a complex idea, this class provides a simple approach certain to bring impressive results.Beginning with a thorough breakdown of basic isolation technique, Amy will expand such elements as core strength and relaxed tension, and then demonstrate helpful exercises that are necessary to develop an awareness needed to isolate key muscle groups. Then she will teach and drill an isolation combo that incorporates the artistic flare unique to Amy Sigil and UNMATA.

Auditions for Diffusion 2008!!

Diffusion is the show for experimental, on the edge cultural dance. Hosted by Visions In Dance, the show will feature dancers from all over the dance community. Diffusion is where a dancer can come to express themselves, their story, and their dance with out fear. The performance will be Saturday, January 19th 2008.

VHS/DVD submissions will be accepted untill October 31st 2007.

Live Auditions will be held September 30th and October 21st 2007. Location TBA (will be in Dallas area) To schedual an audition contact diffusion.dance@gmail.com

Time limits: Solos up to 4 minutes 30 seconds. Duests up to 6 minutes. Trios up to 7 minutes. Troupes up to 9 minutes.

I want to extend a HUGE HUGE THANK YOU to all the wonderful dancers who came out to experiment on the Diffusion stage. And another Thank You to all the folks that came out, weathering the cold, to come see what this mix of dancers had to offer.

We tried very hard to span many styles of dance, and many themes. We sincerely hope that the range and stories were interesting to you, the audience and dance community.

We request that if you have ANY Suggestion on how to make it a better event next year, to email us and let us hear your voice, we would deeply appreciate it. Please let us know how we can better serve the dance community through this event, from the audtion process to the actual presentation.

Egyptian Workshop in early November

Hi all,
I just wanted to get a feel for an interest in this. I am think of sponsoring Katia of Boston to come here in early November. She has fantastic, unique, Egyptian Style dance. I study with her often, been to her retreat in Boston, workshops in various places in the US, and went to Egypt in March with her as well. She has been dancing for over 30 years and has gone to Egypt at least once every year since 1980! Just a plethera of knowledge and expereince!

Retiring from Teaching for a While

If you're enrolled in my current session at the Heights then stop panicking because I'll be finishing out the term. However I have decided not to renew the class as it is not a good fit. I would not recommend this location to any hopeful teachers out there at this time.

I'm not sure when I'll begin teaching again as I want to work on my own dancing a bit and I don't know how long it will take me to find a new teaching venue.

To my students, I love you guys dearly and you're the reason I gave the Heights a second try. You are wonderful and you work so hard it makes me proud. I'll miss you.

Movin' on, movin' on.

Anajahela and I just performed with Kathy and Company up in Denton last night. They are such nice people it's always a pleasure to dance with them. Luckily they invite us to perform with them several times throughout the summer so we get to dance with them again at the Lake Dallas Mayfest. They treat us just this side of rock stars which is always appreciated by us.

On a good note my foot seems to be getting better. My heel has stopped hurting and it only aches toward bedtime. Only time will tell if the heel pain will come back and only time will fix the injury but that foot held me up all by its little self with a lot less wobbling. Yay!

Byblos

After all the discussion that has gone on in the Liquid Hips and the other DFW area tribes, myself and Anajahela have decided not to support Byblos. While I hesitate to use the word boycott I guess that's the closest thing. Honestly we only frequent it for dance events that are held there or if we are in the neighborhood. I imagine we'll be enjoying ourself at the Taco Bell a mile down the road from here on out.

I had to confer with Anajahela about this and she didn't hesitate at all. I find the entire situation detestible and if I had seen the event I would absolutely testify. It is reprehensible for this to have happened regardless of the style of dance or the dancer herself.

I have heard of dancers being accosted in the parking lot after a show or even on the way in. I have heard them have to "handle" grabby men (women too on rare occasions). I have heard of dancers being propositioned by the owner of the club numerous times. This is the first I've heard of a dancer being attacked during a performance. I had thought it was the one place a dancer might be safe. I guess I was naiive in my thinking.

Classes start Wednesday, June 7th at the Heights Recreation Center in Richardson.

Belly Dance II - Take those basic moves and begin layering them and stringing them together in combinations. You will learn 7 different shimmies in this class! 6:30pm - 7:45pm $75 for the 10 week course.

Choreography & Technique - We will choreograph "I Put a Spell on You" by Natacha Atlas together as a class. Guidelines will be provided to help you create a successful group choreography with the rest of the class. You will also learn mood, music, and appropriate costuming while learning some of Miss Red's more advanced moves including some Romany and a bit of tribal here and there.
7:45pm - 9pm $75 for the 10 week session.

Rockin' the Old Folks

Last Friday Angela and I performed at Trinity Terrace Retirement Community and nursing home. I am here to tell you that performing for elderly people is wonderful, especially the retirement community.
One woman came up to us and told us she'd been to Egypt 8 times and when she found out neither of us had ever been, she insisted we get there as soon as we can. As it turns out she's the oldest resident in the building at 101. Wowie! I hope I am that fabulous when I'm older.

The nursing home residents were pretty great as well though not nearly as responsive. We still had to take pictures with 3 of the residents. They were very sweet to us!

This was one of the best audiences we've had. Every where we looked there were smiling faces. Trinity Terrace is also the nicest retirement community/ nursing home I've seen to date. I might have to get on the list there.

Old folks are cool!

Class starts Tuesday, March 7 and goes from 7 - 8:20pm.

This is a basic beginner's class. I've written a 3 1/2 minute routine to go with it to Eshta from Raks Zahina. The only thing you'll need is yourself. Well, stretchy clothes and a hip sash would be good too.

Well, it's over

Yesterday was my last class at Body of Sun. I busted their butts so much I busted my own in the process.

What a great group of students I have. They put up with me forgetting the choroeography I'm teaching, they patiently continued drilling when I had a new student who wasn't quite getting it, they learned the same moves many times in my ongoing class, and many more of my foibles. They achieved more than I'd hoped each and every class and I am so proud.

I will miss them very much while I am off and scrambling for a new venue.

Any Advice?

The store where I teach is closing in January. The owner, Jenay, is liquidating and moving to Northern California so there's no option for me to move with it.

I've been checking community centers and all but the furthest from me already have teachers. I have a steady base of about 6 students with lots of walk-ins, etc.

What are my other options? I'm not sure I can afford a studio yet though I will probably need one for practices until I have a class facility.

I'd love a suggestion or 2.

Focus Change for Kami/Ariellah Workshop in DFW

So by now you may have heard that Kami Liddle and Ariellah Aflalo will be here in the DFW area Sept. 17-18th for two days of workshops and a Sat. night show. This was begun as a for profit seminar sponsorship by Behka and myself, but with circumstances being what they are after the hurricane we just couldn't do it. Behka and I met today and here is what we have come up with:

We have to cover the overhead we have expended for this event, but all monies collected after that amount will be donated to the relief effort. We would like to find a charity that would do the most good with the money we are donating and possibly even have it stay here in the DFW area to help those refugees who are being housed here.

As far as the show goes, we have decided to make it a donation show. This means if you have already purchased a ticket, that money will go directly to charity. If you haven't purchased a ticket yet, simply drop your donation at the door when you enter the show. We are also opening the show and seminar to any dancer (and their families) from the Louisiana, Mississippi or Alabama area who was displaced by the hurricane free of charge.

We will also see what we can come up with as far as a silent auction with donated items for the evening, so let us know if you have something to donate. We could also possibly collect clothing items and such to be dropped at a local collection area.

We also thought it would be really nice to volunteer our time as a collective group after the event is over. The seminar will end on Sunday at 3:30 P.M. and we are currently researching volunteer opportunities in the DFW area where we could all go to possibly help out as well.

Behka and I went by the hotel today and the renovations are almost done!! New carpets and no construction junk laying around!! Yeah!! There are 150 rooms at the Bedford Inn (aka Holiday Inn). The manager said that currently there are no refugees staying at the hotel. He did not forsee anyone having a room there displacing a family, but Behka and I will stay in contact with the hotel and will post any updates that may be different than this information as soon as we hear anything.

So this has all happened suddenly and we would welcome suggestions from our dance community near and far.

American Tribal Style Bellydance is a form of bellydance made famous by FatChanceBellyDance of San Franscico, CA and Gypsy Caravan of Portland, Oregon. Wow!

Last weekend Anajahela and I went to Tahiya Hassan's drum solo workshop. It kicked major petooty! It made me realize how much of that Egyptian style I've forgotten while pursuing Gypsy dance.

I managed to keep up and only feel like a creaky marionette on a couple of moves. I thought that Tahiya was a good teacher, in fact a great teacher for me. She managed to get across moves that I didn't think I'd even have a shot in the dark of learning.

Anyway, Tahiya kicked ass! I'm going back to her 6-week course in September.

Hello everyone!

I have decided to change the format of class a little bit. I realized that because I'm always teaching the basics, I'm not teaching a lot of the things that I do myself. Since teaching is about sharing what you know I'm making each month a specialty of a differnt variety. Here is the schedule for the rest of the year:

June - Zills This will be a simple routine to get you moving with zills. I will also teach the Triplet, fill, Chiftitelli, and Karshlimar rhythms. We have some practice zills in the store if you need them.
July - Veil This will be a simple veil routine done with silk veils. I have some silk veils you can borrow or purchase for $20.
August - Shimmies! We will do a short routine filled with every shimmy I can think of and then some!
September - Skirt Dance. I have a wonderful little song from the movie Frida that relates the passion of the skirt. You'll need a gypsy skirt for this one.
October - Turkish Rom dance. While it's still a middle eastern dance, Turkish Rom is different than most you've seen. There will be some hopping and floor work. Knee pads and knee braces for those who need them will be required for this one.
November - Goddess Dance. Every woman is a goddess and goddess is in every woman. This is a fusion of cultures around the globe and middle eastern dance.

I hope to see you in class! We'll be the ones whooping it up and having a fabulous time!

I just put up the I dream of Jeanie costume that is our inspiration for the CDF costumes. We'll be wearing pants instead though since it's about a thousand times easier to make than a circle skirt and we'd have to make pants anyway because it's sheer fabric. Sun. 4/10 Workshop/Perfromance

Hippieshake is sponsoring TE in a 2-hour workshop this Sunday at the Move Studio (corner of Preston/Cambell in Dallas) $20 if you preregister, $25 at the door. We will cover several basic moves and their transitions so that we may dance in duets. I will also work on some of our more advanced moves as time permits.

After the workshop, we will be performing at Constantin's. The show starts at 7:30 P.M. and TE will be opening the show. The restaurant serves Romanian cuisine. 15404 Midway Road, Addison, Texas 75001. (972) 866-8100. There will be other local dancers featured there as well, so come out for a fun-filled afternoon and a relaxing evening with great food!

Favorite "traditional" piece

Okay, so I notice that other moderaters are leading nice little discussion threads and always being one to follow the crowd (insert a big snort here) I thought I'd do the same. Actually I just know a good idea when I see one.

So what is your favorite piece of "traditional" Middle Eastern music? What's your favorite non-traditional?

My favorite traditional is Bitwannes Beek. Stop laughing, Anajahela! I rave about that song all the time. We're hoping to write a piece for the REG Project's version of it. I also really love the one from 1001 Nights.

My favorite non-traditional? Probably Dead Can Dance and I am a bum because I forget the name but it's the first track from Into the Labyrinth. Der.

Tribal Feat Workshop

Well, Lauryn, Katie and I went to the Tribal Feat workshop today. Holy crap! Those ladies are tough! They busted our butts for almost 2 hours straight. It was so cool to learn some of those amazing tribal fusion moves of theirs. You know how they look so strong? Well, they are. Those moves take so much strength, they must warm up with yoga for survival. Still all 3 of us made it all the way through the workshop for which we are proud.

I'd recommend taking a workshop with Tribal Feat, especially if you want to have strong arms and thighs.

Now I want to take more Tribal. I love this stuff! And this from a cabaret gypsy dancer who was scared she would embarrass herself.

I thought it might be nice to tell ya'll that I've volunteered Just Fab to bring cleaning supplies for the tsunami benefit. Garbage bags, windex wipes, clorox wipes, some sponges and some pine sol oughta do it.

I'll try to stop volunteering us for stuff now. Oh, I'd like to put an ad in the program too.. A business card size will be 30 bucks. Dirt cheap, in my book.

I just got a chance to see the Dolunay Rose performance from the Spark tour. It kicked six kind of ass! Wow, Martha you come off so well on video, you little hottie, you! Sometimes I forget how good that choreography is.

As for me, I need to make a bra that doesn't have to have the sides, straps, and back covered. I wanna have black lacey arms too!

Web Site for Dancers

Ok, this is just at the "kicking it around" stage, but some dancers have suggested to me that a web site for hiring D/FW bellydancers/troupes for events is something our community needs/desires. I used to be a web site designer, so I think I could handle this project. I haven't considered the yearly/monthly fee (which would be nominal, of course). The site would basically be a database of dancers/ troupes in the community available for special events. Each dancer/ troupe would have the following posted about her/it:
1. pic(s)
2. bio
3. contact info
4. availability
5. pricing (if you want this published. If not, the interested party would have to contact you).
6. web site ( if applicable)
Is anyone interested in this kind of thing?

Tsunami relief volunteering

Hello, Everyone.

Okay, so I volunteered JustFab to work the door at the Dances from the Heart tsunami benefit we're doing on February 27th. I'm also the volunteer coordinator so I'll be staffing the whole shebang.

So who wants to work that benefit? It's an all day affair in Fort Worth. I know I need door staff but there will be all sorts of other stuff needed too which I will find out asap. We will have lots of other volunteers but I made us responsible for this.
